Communicating with the locals using the universal language of music

Human emotions bursting from unfamiliar instruments and unknown words flowing forth with passion. An unknown language but still the music speaks and everything is innately understood. Tap your toes and feel the beat throughout your body as the music consumes you and you become the place you are visiting.

 

Where words fail, music has the ability to take over and communicate meaning in a  universally understood way. If you haven’t quite mastered the language of the country but desperately want to sincerely communicate with the locals, don’t give up– music is another option. Carry a harmonica in your pocket. Or wear an ocarina around your neck and play a tune as you stroll through the market. Your message will be heard. Follow the distant sounds of a drum circle and join in. If you travel with an MP3 player, try letting the locals listen to some of your favorite music and watch their curiosity turn to amusement. Or if you don’t have an MP3 (or even if you do), sing a song to that child ogling your strange foreign face as you walk by. Maybe you’ll even get one back.

 

Research traditional music from the country you’re visiting. Look up local bands online (try myspace) and local (or traveling) bands and musicians in the area using couchsurfing. Use these resources to listen and become familiar with the local instruments and styles. If you’re staying long enough, take lessons. Keep your ears tuned for music wherever you go and let it become the sweet soundtrack of your travels.
