Packing light girl-style

Lightweight female travel

As you may have noticed, Rolf is currently in the midst of traveling around the world with only what he can carry in his pockets.  He’s got a toothbrush, a change of underpants, and an iPod Touch to do his blog posting from, as well as some presumably bulging cargo pants pockets.  I did see one blog post on his round-the-world-as-a-lightweight diary, pointing …

Ultralight backpacking: tips to lighten your travel load

The ultralight backpacking craze started with one Ray Jardine and the Pacific Crest Trail Hikers’ Handbook , which outlined Mr. Jardine’s efforts to hike the PCT with the absolute minimum weight of pack.  Since then, ultralighters have refined their gear until a tent can weight 2 pounds, a backpack 4lbs, and a stove only 12 ounces.  The true gearheads quibble over remaining ounces …

Packing food for the flight home

People will try to bring anything on a plane (and the TSA will most likely try to ban it).

With the number of people traveling over the holidays it’s inevitable that some will either return home with gifts of food or mom’s leftovers. Yet the TSA (Transporation Security Administration) is as steadfast as ever in its limitations, even posting new food rules in time for this year’s …

How to choose and use packing cubes

I opened my backpack, reached a hand into its dark depths and frowned. It was going to take forever to find the black shirt I was looking for. The clock next to the bed said I had to leave in five minutes.

My hand fished, searching for the black shirt. It kept coming up grasping other clothing: a blue shirt, a cardigan, a black skirt.

Let’s just say I’m not the most organized of …

Packing for a longterm trip in a warm climate

Packing for long-term travel is unique because you have to consider what you may need over a long period of time rather than what you can do without for a few weeks. Questions arise, like Will I need allergy meds? How many books should I bring? How many tank tops do I really need? Is it worth bringing my laptop? Here are some simple tips that I’ve learned from over- and under-packing …

The end of the backpacking trail for Nomadic Matt?

I stumbled upon a list of the most popular travel sites in the world and ended up reading this post from Nomadic Matt, rated as number one: apparently, he is not “nomadic” anymore, as he has settled down in New York City. Crawling back to the other links embedded in the post, I gained a better understanding of Matt’s end as a perennial …

Packing for a round the world trip

Packing.  Just that one little two syllable word can cause angst and frustration in so many people.  When flights are involved in your travels, there are so many decisions to make, especially with all the rules, restrictions, and fees the airlines have put in place over the past decade.

When it comes to packing and air travel, decisions have to be made.  One of the biggest questions I have …

Indie Flight Hacking from BootsnAll

When you’ve taken the plunge and went from that dreaming stage to the actual planning stage of a RTW trip , it can be overwhelming to consider all the possibilities.  I know when my wife and I first started planning our RTW trip, we (wrongly) assumed we would be able to go everywhere.  For someone whose longest trip up until then had been 3 weeks, a year seemed like forever.

But …

Confessions of a packing geek

OK, I’ll say it. I actually like packing for a trip. From figuring out which bag to use, to cracking open my closet, to deciding if the laptop comes along or gets to rest—it helps me kind of warm up for travel.

I don’t always need warming up. Sometimes, the suitcase never gets fully unpacked, and my job is half done. But when there’s at least two weeks between trips, I like the …
