Travel Urban Legends

So, who hasn’t wasted an afternoon rooting around on Snopes.com? If you haven’t, now might be the day to try. Snopes is a website devoted to debunking urban legends, myths, and hoaxes in the realm of travel as well as everyday life.

So maybe the cactus didn’t explode and spray baby tarantulas everywhere, but it is true that a man lived in an airport for over 10 years (which Tom Hanks’ The Terminal was loosely based upon).

There is a category of Travel urban legends to explore, as well as a Culture Clash Food category to investigate.

Snopes explores rumors and hoaxes ranging from Weddings to Holidays to grotesque images floating around cyberspace.

This is the place to check out hoaxes or rumors you have seen or investigate if that image you keep receiving in your inbox is really the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami breaking over the Phuket, Thailand skyline. (Hint: The photo was not even taken in Asia….)

And if you can’t find enough urban legends there, check out these websites on Disney Urban Legends, more travel urban legends, and a Washington Post article with yet more rumors and tales from the road. Happy surfing!
