Travel quotes and music

Each week Rolf brings us a new quote that makes us look at travel from a broader perspective, or perhaps in a different light. It’s interesting to note that some of these quotations come from all manner of sources, and not simply travel related literature. Indeed it seems easy to find fragments of writing that speak to us about travel and our own paths in life while reading a physics text, a random novel, or a history book. With countless online communities and email lists sharing a new “quote of the day”, it seems most people just can’t get enough of the short golden nuggets of wisdom this lifted text seems to provide.

You can check back here on Vagablogging each week to find a new quote that gets us thinking about our approach to travel. Though there are loads of quotation pages already compiled on other travel websites, like Matador’s 50 Most Inspiring Travel Quotes of All Time. Lists like this only seem to grow as readers enthusiastically tack on their favourite quotations in the comments. Some of these quotations are the kind of short flashy hooks that easily dissolve into cliché, but others may remain with us throughout our loves. And for those who are more music oriented, there seems to be no shortage of pages dedicated to favorite travel songs and soundtracks, like Matador’s 30 Songs That Capture the Spirit of Travel, or 25 Non-Cliché Travel Songs. Vagablogging’s Jill K. Robinson even shared her thoughts about a soundtrack for travel recently.

Inspiration like this reminds us why we travel and perhaps gets us itching to hit the road again. When I was much younger I used to keep a huge notebook to jot down any quote that I found to be inspirational in some way. Naturally the endeavor became unmanageable as the list can go on endlessly, and these days it’s easy to simply do a search on the internet for inspiring literature. And I have to admit, when I come across one of these exhaustive compilations of quotes, I am stayed for quite some time perusing through them. Do you keep a mental or material list of inspirational quotes, both travel related or otherwise?

I have an “inspiration wall” in my bedroom. When I find a quote, lyric or picture that REALLY inspires me, I cut it out (or, more often, write it on a post-it) and hang it up. Then its all there waiting for me as I get ready for the day, or whenever I just need some extra inspiration.

Absolutely! I’ve always loved quotes–of all kinds, write them on the covers/pages of note books and even all over a pair of jeans…which included a poem (written upside-down) so that I could memorize it.
