Surf report

On Friday, I got the email out of the blue: Mavericks. I’d almost forgotten that I’d signed up on the surf competition’s website a few years backā€”the big waves (and big event) never happened in 2007.

The 48-hour notice for surfers (and us fans) meant being on-the-ready during the peak four months, waiting for the right weather and surf conditions. It makes planning difficult, but 24 surfers and 50,000 people showed up on the brilliantly sunny January Saturday in Half Moon Bay, California. (250,000 more viewed the free, live webcast on Myspace.com, and another 1,000 attended AT&T Park in San Francisco for a big-screen viewing).

Events like this that are dependent on fickle Mother Nature aren’t always easy to plan around. But there are still plenty of competitions on the calendar worldwide, from Peru to the UK to Australia.

In other surfing news, I was surprised to see that London might get a pseudo-surf set-up of its own.
