Rolf’s No Baggage Challenge: How much did it really cost?

As you may know, Vagablogging’s ringleader Rolf Potts recently took a quick trip around the world traveling with no luggage whatsoever in the No Baggage Challenge. The trip took the idea of traveling light to an extreme, yes, but it was designed to demonstrate that what we carry with us isn’t nearly as meaningful as the experiences we have along the way.

After Rolf finished that trip, however, there were questions to be answered. How much did Rolf’s trip cost? And how much would it cost to take a similar trip (except you’re actually allowed to take luggage with you)?

Thankfully, Adam Seper broke down the costs of traveling around the world in a recent BootsnAll article. Adam covered all the bases – in elaborate detail – both in terms of what it cost for Rolf’s specific trip, and also for how to take the same trip for even less.

Adam notes that some of the destinations on Rolf’s itinerary – especially the stops in Europe and the United States – aren’t budget-friendly for the true shoestring traveler. He listed helpful information to make traveling in the more expensive places, and included roughly how much to budget per day in every single location on the itinerary.

Not all of us can travel like Rolf, and not all of us even want to. But in addition to inspiring everyone to think twice about all the travel gear we pack with us when we hit the road, the No Baggage Challenge also demonstrated (once again) that it doesn’t take a lifetime of saving to afford a grand trip. In fact, using Adam Seper’s money-saving tips throughout the BootsnAll article, a 7-week RTW trip can cost under $4,000 (excluding airfare).
