International 'holidays' to celebrate this month

What is it about September? Of all things, it happens to be the month for several unusual 'holidays'—all internationally minded, and all within the next week or two.

9/21: International Day of Peace
This day was established by the UN in 1982 as "an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date." You might be able to find an organized event in your area—they're everywhere from Tehran (a candlelit peace memorial) to Ghana (a women's march for peaceful elections). Then again, it can just as easily be honored in a simple way on your own.

9/25: New Horizons Day
Okay, this doesn't seem to be anything more than a Hallmark holiday, but I like the premise. Technically it commemorates the date when Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean. But for the rest of us, it can be a date that inspires us to reach our own "Pacific Ocean," whether it's another geographic destination or a goal that stretches our ideas of what's possible. Any ideas?

9/27: World Tourism Day
Also organized by the UN (specifically their World Tourism Organization), this day seems to revolve around an annual conference more than anything. This year's host country: Peru. The theme: the tourism industry's "response to the challenges of climate change." I wish the website opened up more of a dialogue on the themes of travel. But I'll be curious to check the website again later to see what entries won the photo contest.
