Follow the Sandford family’s RTW travels

Another inspiring story of a family on extended travel comes from Condé Nast Traveler. Wendy Perrin writes about Sue Sandford and her four kids (ages 14, 13, 10, 8), who set off last week for a year abroad. First stop? Russia. Still ahead of them: 33 other countries.

Rather than look at it as a vacation, Sue sees it as the educational opportunity that it is. Along the way, they’ll be visiting schools and participating in community projects. Sue says “My philosophy of it is learning. We’re not there to teach or convert. We’re there to learn.”

Their stories of planning and potential challenges are relatable—we learn about one kid’s gluten-intolerance and another’s fear of vaccinations. So, too, are the realities of packing—Sue has limited everyone to five outfits each (not so easy for the fashionista in the family), which they’ll carry around themselves in backpacks.

Condé Nast Traveler will follow the family’s travels throughout the year, but for daily updates (including blogs from the kids themselves) check out their Our World School website.
