Summer travel reading list in the Globe and Mail

The suggested “Summer Reading List” is a longtime institution in the book sections of major North American newspapers — and this summer I’m pleased to see that Vagabonding has landed on a travel reading list in Toronto’s Globe and Mail.

The roundup, which was assembled by Laszlo Buhasz and Alison Gzowski, includes classic works by writers such as Norman Lewis, Eric Newby, and Redmond O’Hanlon, as well as some more recent selections. “Despite the more than eight-decade gap that separates the oldest title in our survey from the newest,” Buhasz and Gzowski say, “much about the current crop of travel books retains the same spirit: exotic locales, an element of danger and the revelation that you can sometimes learn more about the place you live by leaving it behind.” The editors call Vagabonding “a dangerous book to read after a bad day at work or a fight with your spouse.
