I'd have to agree with The Backpack Foodie. I learned the same lesson with my writing while living abroad; I don't necessarily have to be in a "foreign" place to pay attention to every detail.

We're having a related discussion over on nextstop. A bunch of us have shared our guides to the best spots for photography in our hometowns:

"Travel is a matter of perspective, not location." ~Thoreau
Favorite place to take pictures, any where I happen to be with my camera! Course good light helps tons too!

Photography and travel are a state of mind... I used to think I had to go to locations that are 'foreign' to me to take great shots, because in those places I'd pay attention to every detail as everything was new.

But I've been back home for 2 years, and in this time I've made an effort to keep a 'fresh' look on things... I'm quite happy with the results. Now I'm hooked on rediscovering the things in my own home country by applying a traveler's eye.

Great question. I was overwhelmed with photo opportunities walking through Kathmandu (not Thamel...but the older district) and Old Islamic Cairo. The feeling that life and commerce hasn't changed for hundreds, if not thousands, of years gives the photographer in me an excited feeling.

Hard to say my favorite, I have taken many (and mostly awful) pictures in many countries but (by far) I know the easiest one to have good shots: Namibia. Getting nice pictures around Sossusvlei, Skeleton Coast, Etosha or Damaraland was an easy task compared to many European cities.

The real trick is being able to find what's interesting any place you go! But that doesn't mean I don't have a personal favorite, and that's the UK in general and very specifically London. There's just so much variety in London. Centuries old buildings and super modern architecture and a mish-mash of cultures.

Interesting topic!
