What’s a day in the life of a RTW backpacker like?

There is no shortage of words written about travel, either on blogs or paper, that detail the fantastic things seen and done, the delicious things eaten. It’s probably not a huge surprise that most travel tales don’t include a basic “here’s what my average day is like” entries, since they would likely seem a bit boring to both the writer and most readers.

But BootsnAll member K2 is curious – what is a day in the life of a RTW traveler actually like?

So you get on a plane, you arrive at your first destination, then what? All the blogs usually summarize the places ppl go to or what they’ve eaten but what’s it like day to day? Do you wake up, venture out to explore, maybe talk to locals to find out what good spots there are to eat, get recommendations of activities etc?

To a certain extent, everyone’s daily routine (in as much as they have one) will be a little different, but K2’s question is interesting. Travelers focus on the aberrations of their days, the hours spent at the Taj Mahal or sharing tea in a Tuareg tent, and with good reason. That’s the stuff that travel dreams are made of. But not every moment of every day can be spectacular, even when you’re on a long trip.

So, what is your daily RTW routine? Do you fall into a routine at all when you’re traveling, or do you purposely resist any kind of daily habits? Come visit the BootsnAll boards and leave your thoughts on this question.

Sometimes routine is difficult to break. You get used to arriving at your destination and shaking off the jet lag. The next day you awaken and hit the pavement to explore your home for the next week or two. With so much to see and do, you have to make the most of it. Sometimes a routine can be a benefit.
