Vagablogging: Call for writers

Hey, want to write for Vagablogging?

We’re looking for two dedicated travel enthusiasts to post 1-2 times per week, on any vagabonding-related topics of their choice, from amazing destinations to travel blogging to the latest online booking tools. Ideally, applicants will also be familiar with Rolf’s book, Vagabonding, and/or the philosophy behind it. Knowledge of Vagablogging itself won’t hurt, either!

Sound like you?

Please send two previously unpublished sample blog posts (200+ words each), along with some information about yourself, your travel experience, and why you’d like to contribute to the blog, to eva (dot) holland (at) gmail (dot) com. No attachments, please, just paste the samples into the body of the email.

Browse the blog archives for an idea of the sort of thing we’re looking for, and send any questions my way at the above address.

Note: while Vagablogging is not able to pay its contributors, I can tell you from personal experience that writing here offers valuable experience and exposure, even leading to paying gigs!

The deadline to apply is January 1, 2009 (Happy New Year!) which will also be my last day here at the blog.

Thanks, and looking forward to hearing from you!

Will there be anything given in exchange for the successful applicants beyond the valuable notoriety that comes with having one’s name associated with such a worthy endeavor?

  2. Eva Says:

Good question! Should have mentioned that.

No, Vagablogging does not pay — but I can tell you from personal experience that the exposure I’ve gotten writing for the site has been very valuable!

  3. jquaglia Says:

I’ve noticed that none of the posts on this blog ever link to other URLs of the site’s bloggers.

The best way to get exposure online always seems to be linking to my own blog from a guest post I make somewhere or a comment I make.

Would we have the ability to link to another site which may provide a more in depth look at our journeys? Or are the stories we tell and the exposure we get limited strictly by our posts here?

  4. Liv Says:

I like how gently “aspiring writer” posed the compensation question. :)

Good luck to you in your future endeavors, Eva!

  5. Merrill Says:

So many sites looking for contributors…so few ready to pay them.

    Thanks, Liv!

Jquaglia – I’m afraid someone more technically knowledgeable than I am would have to answer that question, as far as links embedded in the byline. But I know a lot of Vagabloggers have steered readers towards their own sites in their posts — many of us write for other sites (or our own blogs) that offer valuable resources for travelers, and this is a great place to share them.

Merrill – True. But you’ll note this site doesn’t have any ads — it’s a shared resource, and those of us who choose to contribute do so knowing no one is profiting off our work except other travelers.

  8. Eva Says:

Okay, I’ve updated the post to include the compensation info! Thanks!

  9. Merrill Says:

Eva : I get you point and I understand that this blog can help in other ways.

  10. Alison Says:

Eva, sorry to see you leaving the blog! Happy holidays and best wishes!

  11. Kelsey Says:

For the record: I’ve written 423 posts this year for my personal blog (probably a higher word count than the book I wrote this year) and didn’t get paid a cent. Professional writers write for free too.

  12. Would you write on another travel blog for free ? « Voyageek Says:
