A while back, Twitter re-designed their user interface. What escaped most attention was how they also beefed up their search capability.

The social media blog Mashable.com did a brief write-up about this function: How to use Twitter’s advanced search.

More importantly, they produced a short video showing off how to use Twitter as an alternative search engine to get more personalized results. In the second example on the video, the narrator explains how you can use Twitter to help plan a trip. There were helpful hints on how to avoid irrelevant tweets due to a hot trending topic.

The cool benefit I liked was how you could use Twitter to find out local news the residents were buzzing about. In the video, the example given was a star baseball player who got traded to another team. Keeping tabs on what citizens were concerned about could really ease the path to making friends. Great way to think up “icebreaker” topics when talking to hometown folks.
