Update: Take a Seat in Ecuador

Months ago, Vagablogging featured an interview with intrepid bicyclist Dominic Gill on his journey riding his tandem bicycle from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina. He named his journey “Take a Seat”. The catch is, he would try and find passengers along the way to help him pedal his two-seater all the way to the southern tip of the Americas.

He is currently cycling through Ecuador, having traveled 11,673 miles so far, 6,664 of which were solo.

Dominic’s journal describes everything from his encounter with a woman asking if God was riding in the tandem seat (Sept. 7, 2007) to his entry telling of a brutal bout of food poisoning at a gas station in El Salvador (May 28, 2007).

Whatever predicament he faces, Dominic adds insight and color, commenting on the “sweaty, delirious pilgrimages to the gas station toilets, which I was lucky enough to share with a variety of guests, from those snorting coke off the cistern, to loveable beer bellied truckers.”

In addition to his journal entries, Dominic chronicles his journey through photography and is filming for an upcoming documentary (the trailer is available for viewing here).

One photo from his collection, below, shows his view looking back at the Costa Rican road he cycled in June.
