The 50 greatest travel quotes

Over at Brave New Traveler, road-weary Tim Patterson finds some inspiration in a list of his 50 favorite travel quotes. Quite a few of them I’ve heard before, but there are also some new gems:

“People travel to faraway places to watch, in fascination, the kind of people they ignore at home.” – Dagobert D. Runes

“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.” – James Michener

“A wise traveler never despises his own country.” – Carlo Goldoni

“Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.” – Paul Theroux

“The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.” – G. K. Chesterton

One of my favorite quotes not on Tim’s list is from Michael Crichton, and was re-printed in Vagabonding:

“Often I feel I go to some distant region of the world to be reminded of who I really am… Stripped of your ordinary surroundings, your friends, your daily routines, your refrigerator full of your food, your closet full of your clothes, you are forced into direct experience. Such direct experience inevitably makes you aware of who it is that is having the experience. That’s not always comfortable, but it is always invigorating.”

Check out the whole list here. Got a favorite travel quote you’d like to share? Leave it in the comments.

Thanks for the shout, Aaron – note that the list was compiled by Lola Akinmade – I just added an editor’s intro.

One of my favorites, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” It’s painted on our living room wall!

Sorry for the noob question. Could you tell me what this site template is? I truly like it. Or is it customized one, maybe? I believe it will be a good choice for adsense as well. I’d really appreciate it if you can let me know about it. Thanks.
