I am just finishing the last of Peter’s 3 books. I would also like Peter’s e-mail or some way to tell him how much I have enjoyed, learned, laughed and been inspired by his writing. I recently had to move to North Carolina, having been laid off. I am now a “Damned Yankee”: a northerner who has moved to the south and stayed.I have been trying to write about the over 50 jobs I have had in America. Peter’s writing has me thinking about changing my writing style a more direct “this is what happened” style. If you can’t give out his e-mail I hope he sees this. Thank-you Peter for the great books, they give me hope for the future.

Colin Darch’s comment upon a European toilet gives one pause, but surely a 74-yr-old contemplating career change shall not be deterred. I would like to contact Mr. Hessler to ask about TESOL: either in China, or any of the countries with which he has experience. It would be from a similar standpoint as Mr. Hessler’s, that is as an observer and reporter, that I wish to initiate a travel-education-journalistic project. Not knowing where to begin is a bit of a problem — but a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step : who said that? Lao Tsu?

My wife and I have just spent three months on the island of Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, where I have been teaching maritime English to future seamen. Peter Hessler’s River Town described so many similarities to our situation that we thoroughly enjoyed it, and benefited from it.
As a seaman I spent many years with oriental crews and made uncomfortable calls at Shanghai during Cultural Revolution.
It is refreshing to come across a sympathetic, apolitical, appraisal of China, like Hessler’s.
Returning to England in a few days time it is certainly not the political system, creature comforts, or TV we
anticipate with pleasure, just simple things like a European toilet. At 66 and 71 its hard to squat, though it suits Chinese and is biologically more efficient,so why should they change?

i recently read mr. hessler’s oracle bones and currently reading his river town. i am simply bowled over by his sensitivity and hitting the nail on the head. he is clinically precise about and does not denigrate the chinese people when i suppose should he so choose he could have been super critical. i look forward to his next book. if possible i would like to have his email so i could directly communicate with him. best wishes.
