Seven myths of being a travel writer

Jen and Carl beat me to this days ago, but in case anyone missed it, I did want to point out Tim Leffel’s “Seven Myths of Being a Travel Writer” article at Transitions Abroad online. Leffel references several of my RolfPotts.com travel writer interviews from past months, and his myths include such common misconceptions as:

  • Travel writers make enough money to live on.
  • Editors are hungry for travel stories from new writers.
  • A destination is a story.
  • Readers want to hear every detail about your personal experiences.
  • Travel magazines love long stories.
  • You write a story, you get paid, it soon gets published.
  • All your expenses will be covered.
