National Travel Writing Month begins this April

Christine Gilbert, writer of the travel blog Almost Fearless, is rounding up aspiring travel writers all over the country for National Travel Writing Month (NaTraWriMo). The challenge starts on April 1, 2009, and will last until the 30th of the same month. As for the challenge itself, here’s what the founder has to say about it:

“Write one beautiful query letter per day to a publication of our choice. Want to write an article instead? You can do that, just make sure you submit if for publication. The idea is spend some time everyday, doing what writers love to avoid: selling our writing.”

Unlike similar month-long writing challenges which focus on getting the work done, National Travel Writing Month focuses on getting your work published. You won’t be doing it alone, though. The official website includes a forum, blogs, and other tools that will allow participants to interact with each other and showcase their progress. Right now, though, there are only a handful of members, but that number is expected to rise when April draws closer.

Click here to visit the NaTraWriMo website. If you want to explore the website further, you will be required to sign-up for an account.

Do you want to become a travel writer? If so, will you be joining NaTraWriMo this April?

I’m a professional travel writer, and I love the idea of celebrating the field and encouraging new talent. However, sending 30 pitches in 30 days? Crazy advice. I wouldn’t dream of doing that. Far better to really hone your ideas and target them to exactly the right publication. And, if they’re talking sending the same idea out 30 times, that makes no sense either. You need to give eds time to respond.

If you’re a travel-writing newbie, make this the month to get your ideas out there. But don’t go crazy for the sake of it. Good luck to all.
