National Geographic Traveler’s new blog

Joining the growing field of responsible-travel coverage, heavyweight National Geographic Traveler has just launched a new blog about authentic and sustainable travel, Intelligent Travel, or IT. If, since you’ve already been reading Traveler’s IT – and its archive dates back to October 2006 – you’re wondering why they’re calling it new, doubt not: Yes, IT has been around for awhile, as Inside Travel. Now it’s called Intelligent Travel. Inside Travel was a grab bag of Traveler outtakes. New focus, new name. Still IT.

As you may recall, the old IT won Best Travel Blog at the 2007 Travvies before it had even turned a year old. So, if it ain’t broke…why the change? IT’s answer:

Our new mission is rooted in what the National Geographic Society stands for: inspiring people to care about the planet. Traveler and IT also want you to experience and enjoy the planet. And now we’ll help you journey with greater sensitivity to the impact your trip has on a place and its inhabitants.

Less than a month old, looks like IT’s off to a strong start. They’ve taken on “green” hotel fakers, talked up Pico Iyer and – instant authenticity, folks – included Vagabonding in their IT’s Picks section (not us, but still…). IT’s definitely worth a look.

  1. Emily Says:

Glad you found us! We’re excited about our new focus too. We’re travel junkies, like you, and want to make sure we limit our footprint on the places we love most.

To clarify: our archives actually date back to April 2006, but we’ve chosen to display only 10 months on our sidebar.

And, keep up the good work, Vagabonding. You’re one of our faves!
