Mountain: A new travel book from The Guardian

The UK’s Guardian is one of my favorite newspapers – I think the reporters and writers of the paper are some of the best in the industry. I’m currently reading ‘The Ghosts of Spain’ by Giles Tremlett — Guardian’s Spain correspondent — and it is fantastic. I have no doubt that their latest travel-adventure book needs to be grabbed off the shelf.

Entitled ‘Mountain‘, the book is full of stories from the five unsuccessful attempts at climbing the world’s highest 8,848 meter Mount Everest, and the final triumphant attempt that was in 1953.

According to Wikipedia, till date there have been about there have been 3680 ascents to the summit, by over 2,062 individuals, and 203 people have died en route. Needless to say the ascent is ambitious and extremely dangerous, which is precisely why the stories of people who have tried to accomplish this feat will surely be inspiring and encouraging.

You can read extracts here, and although the book is yet to be published, can be ordered at the Guardian bookstore.
