Mark Twain on the mind-expanding power of travel

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
–Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad (1869)

I had found this quote in a newpaper years ago, cut it out and made a book marker out of it. But I has been lost, now I can use it again. One of the quotes I like to use when I lead a tour group.

Thanks, great site, will visit more often

I have found that this quote is one that needs to be lived out to be realized. The people who appretiate this quote the most are the people who have traveled. Its almost impossible to live travel vicariously…this is my favorite quote
