Is Vagabonding a smart career move?

A recent Wall Street Journal article said that the crisis is sending people overseas to look for greener pastures. I think this is a bit of an illusion, and that it’s just taken longer for the crisis to reach other places. Even fast-growing markets like Dubai and China are starting to feel the effects now.

Although if more people fall in love with traveling and become more concerned about the world, that would be a good thing. It’s my ambitious, career-driven friends back home who are the hardest for me to convince to go abroad.

On a related topic, I was wondering if there was a shortcut to getting a professional job overseas.  Most of the foreign executives I know say they were sent abroad by their companies in their home country. But going that route could mean years of dues-paying work at home while I could be living in a foreign country.

Maybe the answer is to do an MBA abroad. You can choose the city you’d love to work in and do an MBA program there.  You’d have the advantage of being in-country.  It’s be much easier to make contacts, collect gossip on potential employers and do internships.  Of course, you’d have to check to make sure your school is accredited by an association like the AACSB. You wouldn’t want to waste time and money on a degree that isn’t recognized by prospective companies.  Here’s an article with more information: Studying Abroad: Getting an MBA Overseas
