How “uncommon” is the art of long term travel these days?

With the second edition of Vagabonding being created as we speak, it got me thinking about the changes in the world of travel that have occurred since Rolf wrote the first edition.

In those days the art of long term travel was indeed “uncommon” - but today it seems that everyone is at it.

No longer just the domain of the adventurous yet permanently poor traveller, these days as you gad about the globe you’ll be accompanied by flashpackers, those on sabbaticals or career breaks and people who travel the world permanently running a business as they go - or as I call myself, a location independent professional.

At the start of my current journey, I wondered just how many other people were also like me; as is typically the case, if you look for something you’ll find it.

I found more than 30 other blogs/websites of others who travel and work as they go…and these are just the ones who blog/create websites about it. I’m sure there are hundreds more who don’t. If you’re interested and looking for some inspiration, the list is here.

One can’t help but wonder however - with increasing fuel costs, energy shortage issues and of course, the challenge of global warming - just how long is this “golden age” of travel going to last?
