Expensive cities on the cheap

Moscow, currently the worlds most expensive city

Moscow, one of the world's most expensive cities.

The sad fact is that some of the coolest cities in the world are also the most expensive. But Budget Travel magazine did a feature story about doing Expensive Cities on the Cheap. Staying in hostels, taking public transportation and eating at local food stalls are classic Vagabonding strategies. This article included some destination-specific tips, like when museums have free admission and what attractions don’t require any money.

Of course, an even better way to save money would be to avoid expensive cities altogether. Check out Budget Travel magazine’s Top Destinations for 2009. One of the main themes seems to be, “bad for locals, but good for travelers.” Currency devaluations, civil unrest and plummeting tourist numbers can pay off for audacious vagabonders.

After the Bangkok riots last fall, the hotel occupancy rate in the city dropped to single digits. Though it’s up a bit now, this has me heart-broken. Yup – we’re all struggling right now, but the majority of us in the Western world can still afford to put food on the table. People in developing countries like Thailand may not have that luxury.

The best thing we can do right now is to travel. Help support the local economies and do take advantage of the great deals to be had.
