Elisabeth Eaves on the allure of travel

“I was obsessed with the idea of travel — not so much to see specific places, but rather because I took pleasure in upheaval. I thought constant deracination was the only way to know who I was, as though by moving around I could distinguish myself from the web of people and routines that enmeshed anything still. I wanted no precious objects, no ingrained habits, and no responsibilities to others. Just the thought of leaving intoxicated me more than a first kiss.”

I really like this quote. Did you enjoy her book? Looks like a fascinating one…

Eaves’s book is indeed interesting, though it comes off a bit cold and clinical at times — and of course it’s always a little disconcerting to read a book that draws conclusions about the male gender based on men’s behavior at strip clubs. As far as recent stripper memoirs go, I’ve heard that Lily Burana’s Strip City is also good.
