Ease into travel mode and rediscover your home country with pre-travel to the airport

Consider this: You live in Nebraska. Your roommate just moved to Chicago. Your fellow expat co-worker from Japan now lives in Boston along with some couchsurfing friends. You’ve been wanting to visit that art museum in New York City for months. You’re planning on flying to Cambodia soon on a vagabonding adventure.

Why not take a pre-Cambodia journey to Boston and fly from there?

Or search a website like Travelocity  or Expedia for the cheapest tickets from random cities in your country, buy a cheap one in a city that interests you and take public transportation or try the rideshare option on Craigslist to get there.

Or Megabus in the Midwest and Northeastern states, which offers tickets as low as $1 (seriously) if purchased in advance.

Traveling in your own familiar country for a short time beforehand can help ease you back into the vagabonding lifestyle again, particularly if it’s a first time trip or you haven’t traveled lately.

This time can also be an adjustment period to get used to carrying a pack around again, frequently asking for directions, and exploring new places with the convenience of knowing the language and the culture.
Plus, you can visit and reminisce with old travel friends and go places you haven’t had the time for before.

This strategy may seem like a lot of unnecessary city-jumping but if you do it right, it doesn’t have to add much cost and it can be one last time to “blend in” and mentally prepare for your journey ahead.

My wife and I live in California, and are driving up to Portland to enjoy the city before flying out for Thailand. Portland will be the last American city we will see for a few years. Also, we’ve talked about flying back in through New York, and driving all the way back to California…with quite a few stops along the way.

great advice! you kind of forget the hustle and bustle of traveling, so easing into at home is smart! and why not get a few friends to go with you as a goodbye party/trip?!
