Confessions of a packing geek

Packing FunOK, I’ll say it. I actually like packing for a trip. From figuring out which bag to use, to cracking open my closet, to deciding if the laptop comes along or gets to rest—it helps me kind of warm up for travel.

I don’t always need warming up. Sometimes, the suitcase never gets fully unpacked, and my job is half done. But when there’s at least two weeks between trips, I like the chance to start over again.

I don’t think it has anything to do with the things, per se. It’s more about what possibilities the things can conjure in my mind. Do I pack the lightweight fleece or the heavyweight fleece? Hey, if it gets really cold, I wonder if we’ll have a bonfire like we did the last time. Should I bring a skirt? If I do, I wonder if I’ll finally try that nice restaurant and put the skirt to some good use. Will those sandals let me wander through the neighborhood I’ve yet to discover—without giving me blisters?

Even though I can slightly live my trip while I’m packing, it’s certainly no substitute for what really happens, even if it wasn’t on my list of imaginings.

I can’t say the same for unpacking, however. That, I’d consider paying someone to do for me.

How about you? Do you like or loathe packing?

My favorite thing about packing is challenging myself to take ever smaller amounts of stuff, do it all using increasingly smaller packs for longer trips. I constantly look for space saving items, stuff that packs up really small (yet is very durable and functional) and lighter in weight. I usually go through my pack just before leaving and try to eliminate at least two items. I never miss them! Its great to travel only with a carryon bag, but nowadays with item restrictions at airports, that can be very frustrating – not being able to take a Swiss Army knife, or a tube of bodywash on some flights. I sometimes am able to travel with no bag at all – just a well designed travel vest or jacket loaded with pockets that wears comfortably, and contains a large pocket area in back … but I’m still refining that method.

Jill, you completely summarized my feelings on the subject of packing. I just love the feeling I get deciding what should go, determining how I can get the most from a single item, and then start to dream of the trip. My wife on the other hand is no fan of packing, but after many years of trying still will not let me pack for her despite my excitement to do it.

Next year we leave for a few years on the road and I am already anticipating filling my backpack for the first time!

    Happy packing!

Many travelers probably wouldn’t admit that they enjoy packing. Some people are SUPER organized and like packing before they leave. It’s a challenge to see how much they can fit into the suitcase and how well organized it is. To each their own…
