I live in Korea and a working knowledge of Hangeul, the quick-to-learn phonetic script, certainly greases the wheels of daily life quite well. You need to know whether you're about to step into a Bank or a Noraenag? whether you're going to order a plate of rice or a plate of live octopus? it's so strange how something we would, in other situations, take for granted now in the perpetual foreignness of travel seem like luxuries.
