BugetTravelOnline.com gets upgraded, too…

One nice thing about Budget Travel magazine is that they post nearly all their content on their companion Web site, www.BudgetTravelOnline.com. Another is that it’s actually a pretty good magazine.

BT Online just got a major upgrade (guess it’s the season for travel site upgrades), so if you haven’t checked it out, yet, now’s a good time to do so. Most of BT’s destination pieces are skippable, though worth browsing once in awhile for ideas. But their How To reports – on good-to-know topics like planning a trip using Google Earth or the efficacy of the Registered Traveler program, to name just a few recently published ones – are usually worth a read, and not just for novice travelers.

Also helpful is Budget Travel’s 20 Tips section, featuring travel advice sent in by BT’s readers. (Actually, Budget Travel just published a kind of best-of anthology of readers’ tips called “The Smart Traveler’s Passport”, too. All kinds of things going on over there.) And the Tools section. The True Stories can be funny. And the slide shows are good (don’t miss the North Korea one). And, uh…anyway, go have a look.

I think Budget Travel proves you can be glossy and appeal to a wide audience without being dumb and chirpy cute in everything you write. I am continually amazed at how useful their website is as a subscriber, I continually find myself dog-earing pages of some great new website or tip I’ve never run across before. They’re doing it right.
