Blog it or slog it?

It seems like the idea of traveling without somehow documenting your adventures online is a pretty uncommon one these days – so the question of how to document a trip has morphed somewhat from “should I keep a blog?” to “what kind of blog should I keep?” The question on the BootsnAll boards that we’re featuring this month fits in the latter category.

BootsnAll member Shawnosaurus is about to leave on a long trip, and he’s trying to figure out whether he should start his own blog or try to write for an established travel site instead.

…my main question is whether I will get a more satisfying experience out of running my own small blog, or trying to find an established travel blog to hitch my wagon to. Or… maybe my answer is actually a combination of the two?

Shawnosaurus is admittedly fond of lists, and he’s outlined what he sees as the pros and cons of both options in the thread. But that doesn’t mean he’s thought of everything.

Do you have input on the subject that will help him make a decision? Do you have experience from which he could learn? Do you have tips for either route that would serve him well? Please pop over to the BootsnAll boards and leave your thoughts on the thread.

Wow, thank you for highlighting my question! I was initially hesitant to post it publicly for input, but I’m glad I did. I’ve received some invaluable advice and perspective from the bootsnall forum goers. It’s great that people care enough about another anonymous internet person’s questions to give their thoughtful feedback. It’s honestly the great community on the bootsnall forums that initially attracted me to consider a travel blog in the first place :)

BootsnAll really is a great resource for independent travelers. I hopped over there and saw all the feedback that result from the question.

Either “blog it or slog it” is fine — the key is to write! What would make you happier? Blogging for your own site or writing for another site.

Regarding your Macbook Pro…You could always purchase a netbook instead of traveling with your Macbook Pro; it will take up less space. Don’t forget about internet cafes, they’re great for writing and meeting people.
