A monster poem from my nephew Cedar
My nephew Cedar, who is now five years old and attending kindergarten in north-central Kansas, has written a new poem. Here it is:
(By Cedar Van Tassel)
A monster is scary,
a monster is deep,
a monster likes to fall asleep.
When it awakes,
it finds its dinner,
of rabbits, bugs, and feathers.
A monster likes to growl at people,
a monster likes to howl.
But if you have a shield and armor,
He’ll run away and yowl.

I’ll be starting an MFA in Poetry this January and I mut say, Cedar inspires me – lets me remember that an open heart and a deeply imaginative spirit are still the best tools in approaching poetry – do tell him I’m a big fan 🙂
