2006: The Year in Rolf

Before we get too far into 2007, I should probably try to sum up my 2006. It was really a nice year for me, in terms of travel and writing, as well as life in general. I visited a number of countries for the first time: Grenada in January, the Dominican Republic in May and June; Luxembourg, Sweden, and the Czech Republic in August; Australia in October and November. I spent six weeks in Paris (four of them teaching my writing class at the American Academy; two of them just writing and wandering in the Latin Quarter); two weeks revisiting Korea (and writing about it for Slate); and six days in New York and New Jersey. I accumulated two weeks of travel time in post-Katrina New Orleans, including a stint at Mardi Gras. For the first time ever, I landed essays in both Houghton Mifflin’s Best American Travel Writing 2006, and Travelers’ Tales Best Travel Writing 2006 — as well as winning a Lowell Thomas Gold Award (for an Outside article about Greece) from the Society of American Travel Writers.

Destinations and statistics aside, here’s a rundown on some other things that happened for me in 2006:

Excellent post, Rolf. I am highly envious of your bookcase. One thing about that pic: I wonder if you might, at some point, elaborate on where you got those interesting masks I see on the wall beside it. One of them looks like a mask I recently picked up in India…

  2. Valentina Says:

Indeed, it sounds like 2006 was a great year for both your professional and personal life. May 2007 be as successful as the previous year (and more!). Buon Anno from Italy.
PS: I cannot believe Cedar is that big now! Time does fly :)

  3. Abha Says:

Wow. I look forward to the day I have so many awesome ‘happenings’ to list at the end of the year.

Wish you a rocking 2007 Rolf!

  4. Rolf Says:

Cheers, Newley and Valentina! Newley, those masks mostly came from Asia, but not India (that I know of). The top one I got in China, next one was from Korea, next was Mongolia, under that was Japan, then Greece. Second from the bottom I got in Thailand, but I think it might be Balinese. Bottom one I got in Burma…

  5. Rolf Says:

Cheers to you, too, Abha! And happy 2007…

  6. Brian Says:

I love the writing pic from Paris with the half-emptied bottle of Jack Daniels behind you. So, how much writing did you accopmlish?

  7. Rolf Says:

Hey Brian, I was wondering if anyone was going to mention to JD bottle! Not your typical Paris fare, but one has to make occasional concessions to home…
